It’s no secret that women in the media experience sexism on a daily basis – with their looks being considered with the same importance as their talent, it’s no wonder that a whole heap of female artists are starting to get pissed with the amount of men and women who deem it necessary to body shame them on a daily basis. Because since when did a woman not looking the way you want affect her credibility as an artist? Hint: it doesn’t. And as Sky Ferreira explained on Instagram yesterday, “It’s not part of our job. Our job is to create stuff.”
Somehow, people still can’t seem to grasp the concept that women are not just objects of desire. Ferreira noted that other prominent female artists are constantly receiving the same negative, rude comments on their social media pages as she is. Miley Cyrus is a notable example of how physical appearance means everything – even with her LGBTQ activism, she still gets called out for being “crazy” and “ugly” and “slutty” because she grows out her body hair (because baby-smooth pits are a very important feature of a sane person) and is open about her sexuality. I mean, god damn, a woman wants to be herself… absolutely criminal. And insane.
Sky Ferreira and the rest of the vagina gang have had enough the internet’s shit, but trolls will be trolls. And the only way to deal with sexist internet trolls is to send them in Clementine Ford’s direction where they will be dealt with the same amount of respect that they project.
